BEAUTY EMPTIES | JUNE 2024

I'm very aware that this supposed lifestyle blog has turned solely into book reviews, so to break it up a bit I'm taking it back to basics and throwing back to the blogging of yore. What screams 2014 Blogspot more than a monthly roundup of accumulated beauty empties?

With no further ado, here's June's...

ARC REVIEW: ONLY HERE, ONLY NOW | TOM NEWLANDS

Only Here, Only NowOnly Here, Only Now by Tom Newlands
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Cora Mowat is a 14-year-old girl growing up in Fife, dreaming of making something of her life in the hustle and bustle of Glasgow. Living with her disabled mum, navigating her way with boys, and battling with undiagnosed ADHD, Cora is the epicentre of a novel that I dare say has all the makings of becoming a modern classic.

MY VSG JOURNEY: WHY AM I DOING IT?

Hello!

I thought it was time to have a chat about something massive that’s impending for me, and to discuss the reasons around why I’m choosing to do such a thing.

it me

That’s me now. Note I never post body shots anywhere online, but you’re about to get some at the end of this post.

In August I’ll be travelling to Turkey to undergo a gastric sleeve operation. This decision has not come lightly, and follows years of umming, ahhing, and endless research. I’ve chosen to go with Booking Surgery for the procedure, and my surgeon will be Dr Katar.

BOOK REVIEW: GIRL IN PIECES | KATHLEEN GLASGOW

Prior to reading Girl in Pieces I did question whether I’d be left a little unfulfilled due to it being classed as a young adult novel, but it resonated with me in ways that I wasn’t expecting. I actually finished this book a few weeks ago, and it’s taken a lot of to-ing and fro-ing over what to include in this write up. I’ve eventually decided to be honest about why it affected me so much…

ARC REVIEW: I SEE BUILDINGS FALL LIKE LIGHTNING | KEIRAN GODDARD

I've read a lot of good reviews for I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning from the book-based accounts I follow and I felt like it'd be a book I'd enjoy as well. I requested the ARC for this one quite close to publication, and after a couple of days I figured it was too close to the book's release to get the chance to read. That is not how it went; on Wednesday evening I got the approval notification...the day before publication!

JANUARY EARWORMS

And now for something completely different…

I thought I’d mix it up a bit as I don’t want this blog to be all books, so I’m here to share my top ten tracks from January according to my Spotify plays. My music taste is somewhat eclectic so I’m starting this post with no idea what will actually come up in this list! I mostly play my liked songs on shuffle and listen to whatever is thrown my way from that.

ARC REVIEW: THE MURDER AFTER THE NIGHT BEFORE | KATY BRENT

“Something bad happened last night, but I can’t remember a thing…”

What an unexpectedly fantastic surprise - my first ARC of the year! I never thought my new little NetGalley account would be chosen to read this in advance, so imagine my delight when I got the email saying I’d been selected! Last summer I read Katy’s first novel How to Kill Men and Get Away With It and immediately fell in love with her writing style; witty and humorous, twisted and emotional, and clever enough to have you rooting for the morally dark main character, despite her murderous tendencies. Suffice it to say, I had high hopes for The Murder After the Night Before from the day it was announced.

BOOK REVIEW: THE TOLL HOUSE | CARLY REAGON

I plumped for The Toll House on whim, as I finished my last physical book while out of the house and wanted to make a start on something new. I bought this on Apple Books last year as the premise intrigued me and the cover is beautiful, then I promptly forgot about it for the remainder of 2023. Finding it in my digital book list was a pleasant surprise, so I dove straight in.

Remembering Matthew Perry

When the question is asked about who my favourite character is from the main six in Friends my answer has always been Chandler. No second thought has ever been needed. For me it’s always been an easy conclusion to place him at the top of the pile because, simply, why wouldn’t it be?

I first saw Friends when I hit high school in 1998. The show was almost halfway through its run but I was captivated from the first time I watched, despite not knowing a single ounce of backstory. A lot of the humour must’ve gone over my 11-year-old head but the excitement of being allowed to stay up late to watch Friends on Channel 4 every Friday night quickly took hold, and I looked forward to it until the show came to an end in 2004.

You Are My Jackson

A couple of weeks ago I finally got a beautiful new addition to my leg tattoo collection!
Some way somehow it'd been almost eight years prior to this appointment since I'd been tattooed, so I was excited, nervous, and more excited to get it underway.

Since he was born I've wanted a tattoo for Jackson. Not all of my tattoos have meaning, and I'm very much an advocate for getting what you fancy simply because it looks good, but there's been a desire to have a Jackson-specific piece for many years.
For as long as I can remember I’ve sang ‘You Are My Jackson’ to him, a song that is – obviously – ‘You Are My Sunshine’with a few words changed for him. I have voice notes on my phone of him singing it with me as far back as 2020, it’s our song, and I'm sure I’ll still be embarrassingly singing it to him when he’s 30.

Well Well

Hello again after a nice little break!

Those of you who had 'She'll Never Update This Regularly' on your Kayleigh's Blogging Again bingo card can stamp that one off...

It seems that as time goes on it becomes more obvious that procrastination is my only strong suit - literally I am currently writing this in place of an essay I have due on Tuesday - and it's kind of the only way I can comfortably function, despite being beyond stressful and not actually comfortable at all. It’s really not a superpower, it’s super frustrating, but I can’t seem to operate unless it’s with a sense of urgency. One year later and I’ve still not had anything further in terms of ADHD-based helped and it’s getting to the point where some days feel unmanageable.

Anyway, tangent aside, a lot has happened since I last posted here, and I’d like to do a little roundup before I post another three things and disappear until 2028. I mean hopefully that won’t happen, but none of us will be surprised if it does, right?

Lush Halloween 2022 Haul: Bath Bombs and Bubbles and Slime, Oh My!

We love a bit of Lush in this house and it's been an age since I've bought anything from them, so I figured it was high time I did a well-deserved haul and treated myself and Jackson to some things from their Halloween range.
Along with enjoying a spook-based treat there was also a slight ulterior motive behind this one.

Film Review: Hocus Pocus 2 | A Little Less Spellbound Sequel, A Little More Disney Cash Grab

Please let me begin this review with a statement of adoration for Hocus Pocus. For nigh on 30 years I've loved watching the Sanderson sisters wreak havoc upon their return to Salem and it's been a film I’ve held dear for all that time, not least because it was one of my first exposures to a celebration of weirdness.
So imagine my delight when I heard the sequel announcement in 2020. An almost two-year wait? No problem! The witches were on their way and the excitement began to build for spooky millennials everywhere.

Fastforward to now. Hocus Pocus 2 dropped on Disney+ yesterday with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy reprising their roles as Winnie, Sarah and Mary respectively. Doug Jones also makes a comeback as beloved Billy.
